There is no single “standard UK garage door size” that guarantees a fit. Door makers publish product ranges in different ways: a nominal leaf size, frame size, ordering size or clear passage size. The surrounding opening and installation space are separate measurements. A manufacturer’s table can help you find candidate models, but it cannot replace a site survey.
A model-specific example
Garador’s up-and-over sizing table labels its listed sizes as nominal sizes between the steel or timber frame. For size code 6666, it lists an internal frame size of 1984 × 1981 mm. The pre-framed canopy version has an overall frame size of 2094 × 2039 mm, while the retractable version is 2124 × 2039 mm. These are three different dimensions for one size code; none should be read as the clear structural opening required by another maker.
Garador also says the table includes no fitting clearance, and specifies extra clearance when fitting between brickwork. That instruction is specific to its products and fitting method. A different manufacturer or a behind-reveal installation may call for another arrangement.
Sectional doors also come in manufacturer-defined sizes and configurations. Hörmann’s technical manual distinguishes door/grid dimensions, clear frame dimension and interior garage dimension, and shows that available sizes vary with door type and style. That is why comparing only the nominal width and height can mislead.
Measure your opening separately
Record the opening width and height at multiple points, then use the smallest measurement as a prompt for the survey. Also measure headroom, left and right side room and garage depth. Note any pipes, shelves, lights, sloping floor or vehicle position that could obstruct the door or its tracks. See how to measure.
The size checker compares your measurements with selected manufacturer examples in its data. If the dimensions do not line up, that does not prove no door can fit; it means you need a different model, a made-to-measure option or an installer’s advice. Check the sizing and fitting guide before requesting a survey.
Planning and building-control requirements for changing an opening are separate from product dimensions. If your project includes structural alterations, ask your local authority or a suitable professional. Rules differ between England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
