Side-hinged garage doors are worth considering if you often walk into the garage for a bike, tools or storage and have room for the door panels, called leaves, to swing. You can open one leaf for everyday access without the overhead tracks of a sectional door. The trade-off is the space the open leaves occupy. Check that first, especially if you park close to the garage.
This guide covers choosing a manual door. Start with how you actually use the garage, then ask the installer to confirm the fitting details for a named model.
Everyday access: choose which leaf opens first

You may see the leaf you use first called the traffic leaf. The other is the fixed leaf: it can also open, but stays secured shut until you need the full opening. Think about which side gives a clear route past your shelves, bins and parked vehicle. A handle on the wrong side can turn a convenient entrance into an awkward one.
Hörmann's side-hinged range offers equal or unequal leaf divisions and a choice of traffic-leaf side. Ryterna also describes custom splits and handing options. These are options to confirm for the selected product, rather than features to assume every door has.
Ask for the clear passage with just the traffic leaf open. A quoted leaf width is not a promise that your bike handlebars, lawnmower or mobility equipment will pass through. Measure the item you need to move and discuss the route with the surveyor. If both leaves must open every time, the pedestrian-access benefit may be smaller than you expected.
Check the entire swing, including the ground
Outward-opening leaves need space outside throughout their movement. A parked car may clear the door when it is shut but obstruct it part way through opening. Ask the installer to show the swing on a plan, including the hinges, handles, final opening position and any hold-open fittings.
Check these points at the survey:
- Where will a car stand while someone opens either leaf?
- Could a wall, gate, drainpipe or bin prevent the required opening angle?
- Does the ground rise anywhere beneath the moving leaves?
- Can both leaves be held open in the intended position?
- Does the open door obstruct the route people normally use?
A rising surface needs a site check; do not solve an apparent clash by assuming the installer can simply leave a bigger bottom gap. Ask how the proposed arrangement would affect the threshold, weather seals and access.
Outward opening is not universal. Ryterna lists inward-opening leaves among its options. An inward-opening arrangement needs its own check of internal obstructions and the manufacturer's fitting requirements.
Low headroom does not settle whether it fits
Avoiding ceiling tracks can make a side-hinged door attractive where overhead storage or a low ceiling complicates other choices. It still needs a suitable opening and frame, with confirmed clear passage after fitting.
Garador's side-hinged specifications describe a factory pre-framed arrangement for between-brickwork fixing and say behind-brickwork fixing is not recommended. They also require a finished, level floor for the bottom bolts to engage. Those are model-specific requirements, not a fitting rule for every manufacturer.
Record opening width and height in several places using the measuring guide. Ask the surveyor to distinguish structural opening, overall frame size and usable passage. The size checker helps organise measurements, but its limited example dataset does not establish a side-hinged door's fit.
Thresholds and holding the doors open
Look at the bottom of the proposed door as carefully as the panel design. Ask for a threshold drawing and discuss pushing wheeled equipment over it, water run-off and the finished floor level. Do not assume a low-looking threshold in a photograph will suit your access needs.
For example, Garador's Georgian specification lists an aluminium threshold, rubber seals, door stays and gas pistons. Other products and quotations may include different fittings. Ask the installer to demonstrate how the leaves are held open and released, and explain the limits and maintenance of those fittings.
What to put in the quote
Request the manufacturer and model, opening direction, leaf division, traffic-leaf side, frame dimensions, clear passage and threshold detail in writing. Add removal of the old door, making good, finish, included fittings and maintenance requirements to the same list.
For alternatives, compare roller and sectional doors, particularly if parking leaves too little swing space. Once the survey has resolved the fitting questions, use the quote comparer to check that each installer is pricing the same job.
